In January 2022, thirty-six leaders in education, health, and justice were gathered into six teams to examine equity issues and design solutions as the inaugural class of the Houston 2036 Equity Task Force. Houston 2036 harnessed the power of the American Leadership Forum, The Holocaust Museum, University of St. Thomas, and other major institutions. These teams each pitched their unique vision for Houston as a model of equity by the year 2036.
Team Fit Houston emerged from the process.
We asked ourselves this question: What is the one thing that could improve daily life for Houstonians, stave off chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cancer, and improve mental wellbeing for Houstonians of all ages and in all communities?
And this was our answer: Physical activity that is free, available in every community, and done through a positive wellness movement. Place-based investment and cultural empathy for a healthier Houston in 2036.
Team Fit Houston began with a vision of HOPE. Fit Houston incorporated as a 501(c)3 in September 2022.
Fit Houston continues its journey toward a healthy and empowered Houston, with a growing Board of Directors and Executive Advisory Board, and more commitments and community support each day.
